12 January 2009 - Break the detox-retox cycle
My Lemon Detox video on YouTube (September 2008) has had over 5000 views and more than a dozen comments. Most comments are questions about how to do a better sort of detox.
My straight answer is that eating light foods like salad or soup for a day - no more than 24 hours - can offer an opportunity to press your nutritional restart button. But drastically cutting food intake beyond 24 hours will result in a significant drop in metabolic rate which is caused in part by a loss of muscle mass.
Even so, there's another reason why I really wish people would drop the detox mindset. A focus on detoxing, say every January after a heavy holiday of beer and bad food, means that 'retoxing' with the same undesirable foods is likely.
It's the detox-retox-detox-retox merry-go-round that I want people to get off. The alternative is a nutrient-rich diet most days with permission to indulge on occasions.
Sure, a day of soup can freshen you up and clean out the system, but stop there. Five, seven or ten days of low-calorie detox is just not needed. It's too hard to stick too and can trigger a retox rebound.
It's time to break the detox-retox cycle. Dejunk your diet and keep it that way!
