28 Jan 2006 - It's the summer of salad
I've been procalaiming this Australian summer as the "Summer of Salad" in an effort to promote the very low-calorie benefits of salad greens and oranges and reds. Corn and potatoes are really the only two vegetables that contain any significant starchy carbohydrate.
Salads have taken off, even at fast food outlets. McDonalds, Burger King and Subway all have them. Sumo Salad and I Love Salad specialise in salad. And then there appears to be a whole aisle of salad at the supermarket now.
Salad seems to have been in the right place at the right time to benefit from the concern over obesity, the trend to healthy takeaways and the drive for convenience.
So, have a think about how you can eat more salad and promote the Summer of Salad. To help out, here's a few verses from a student in a recent nutrition course of mine. We had a little salad jam session. Remember, it's about how you sell the salad that makes people remember and want to eat it!
Salad of '05 (sung to the tune of Brian Adams' Summer of '69 - It helps if you get the tune going in your head before you start reading)
I was just cruusing down the highway
With the wind up in my hair
Felt the sun, warm on my face yeah
Pulled the throttle, on my chromed Harley
Mr and some boys from school
Just need to be fed
Craved for this one thing yeah
I couldn't get it out of my head
Oh when I look back now, the craving just last forever
And if I had a choice, I'd drop the meat and pick the salad
Those were the best days of my life
(Chorus - The Salads of 005)
My eyes on the Ceasar salad
Throw some chicken on it - toss and stir
So full, I need to walk it off yeah
Count my steps with a pedometer
Oh when I look back now
The cravings just last forever
And if I had a choice
If you were human I'd call you my wife
I'm counting my calories
Converting to kilojoules
Leant that from Matt O'Neill
I know he's a health freak too
A side of salad with every meal
Salad munchers unite!
