What motivates people to use a gym?

What motivates you? What motivates you to exercise at a fitness centre?

It's probably a range of factors, like those I discovered when I asked all the gym-going visitors to my website in September 2000 what motivated them to keep exercising at a fitness centre. I received over 100 responses and a large range of helpful tips. After examining the responses, people appeared to be motivated by six different factors.

Here they are, with a sample of responses to explain their meaning:

1.Fear
… of what will happen if I don't keep going to the gym.
… of turning into a total slob.
… of gaining weight.

2. Money
… I've paid up for the next five years.
… The fees are automatically deducted from my credit card.

3. Results
… I'm still waiting to reach my weight loss goal.
… I can see a difference and feel the body fat coming off.

4. Social scene
… I exercise with a friend, so it's a social outlet.
... I like the atmosphere and often go out with others after class

5. Lifestyle
… Keeping fit is part of my life.
… I've made a commitment to improving my health.

6. Positive vibes
… I feel healthier, stronger and have more energy.
… Regular exercise makes me feel good.

Of these categories, which would be most effective in providing you with long-term motivation to stay in shape? If you answered 5 and 6, you're on the right track!
